Story Head

Congratulations on winning Innersection’s second round.
Thanks so much, I’m stoked.

Do you have all of Canada behind you or what?
Well, people up here are so stoked on surfing right now. I don’t think people realize just how popular it is in Canada. The community is stoked to support me.

You must have gained quite the fan club after your Cold Water Classic win.
Yeah, that was huge for me. The crowd on the beach just got bigger and bigger as the week went on. The people up here are just so supportive and I’m sure that has helped with Innersection. Also things like the local TV news airing a story on me and friends hyping my section on Facebook were sure to help.

How does this compare with winning the CWC?
Well, a bit less dramatic. But since I’m a freesurfer, and grew up studying Taylor Steele videos, it might be a potentially bigger win.

Who gave you the most flattering feedback?
Taylor Steele, Kelly Slater, and Thomas Campbell for sure. Particularly Kelly. To know that the best surfer to ever touch a surfboard liked my section was amazing. I’d go into town and people would stop me in the super market and go, “Kelly Slater? Are you kidding?”

Best constructive criticism?
That I needed more combos and more lefts. I think most people were lacking combos. We all need to work on that.

What was your favorite section this round?
I really like Craig Anderson’s surfing and style, although he needed some bigger waves. And I thought Brett Simpson’s was really sick too—he has such explosive turns.

So where do you go from here?
We’ll hopefully be filming tomorrow.

Right, but where will you try to take your section?
Well, Jeremy and I have some ideas, but we’re keeping them under wraps. We want to start from scratch and replace every wave. More combos and lefts—although it’s hard to get good lefts around here. I want to show myself as a complete surfer with a mix of airs, barrels, and carves.

Any travel plans?
Maybe. But if we do travel it won’t be to somewhere like Bali. We’d want to go somewhere unique, somewhere that’s never been seen in a Taylor Steele video before.

Yeah, Bali’s out. I spoke with your wife earlier today when I was trying to get hold of you (hi Lisa), what does she think of Innersection?
Ah man she loves it. She’s all over the site.

Any advice for round three?
I think it was important to have a lot of support early on. I saw from round one that if you were the most commented, the most viewed, or the highest rated section, then that will just snowball with more views.

Thanks for talking with me, Peter. We’re excited to be working with you on this.
Nah man, thank you guys. This is so much fun.

It’s only going to get better, trust me. —interview by Taylor Paul, and big props to Peter's filmer Jeremy Koreski as well, whose clean and understated influence was a huge part of the section's success.

I'm looking forward to some booties and gloves and hoods in a steele vid. Pete's surfing is amazing. Check out O'neills CWC dvd series.

yeah he's definitely right, it was a sick section for sure but it had a definite lack of combos. Combos are the future man, so be there or be square
