Story Head

If you've notice Shane Dorian and Chris Malloy commenting on your section, there's a reason. With so many solid sections to choose from, we've asked these two respected filmmaking surfers to lend a hand with sorting it all out. Expert opinions.

Over the past two decades, Dorian and Malloy poured more heart and innovation into surf filmmaking than most of us will ever realize. Their pioneering efforts both on and off the waves have helped shape the sport we know today. We are honored to have them participating in this project.

As our Winter Round "Experts," both surfers will comment on the sections and share their final Top Five lists with the rest of us. These guys know (and care) more about this stuff than any of us — so listen to what they say.

Now, I must admit, I feel a bit silly "introducing" these guys — it's SHANE DORIAN and CHRIS MALLOY! — but in case you live on Mars and are just here supporting your nephew's whacky hobby, you should rely on their opinions blindly (except when it comes to your nephew of course. He earned a 10 before you even logged in, right? Ugh.).

SHANE DORIAN
is a former world #4 WCT surfer and 2008 Global Big Wave champion. He's been surfing in Taylor Steele's movies since the very beginning (starting with Momentum) and earned the final section in Campaign II. Aside from continuing to be one of the most influential surfers of all-time, his critical analysis of all types of surfing is amongst the best in the world.

CHRIS MALLOY
is one of the most influential surfer/filmmakers of our generation. And he probably hates us for saying that. The oldest of the three brothers, Chris was also part of the original Momentum crew and was amongst the small group of surfers who pioneered the professional freesurfing movement through extensive travel and filmmaking projects. He later evolved his passions into a successful filmmaking career, founding Woodshed Films and producing groundbreaking titles as Shelter, Thicker Than Water and A Brokedown Melody. His latest film, 180 South recently premiered to rave reviews.

Just like you and I, Chris and Shane only get one vote per section. But unlike you and I, everyone of should REALLY pay attention to their ratings, comments and Top 5 picks. When in doubt, look to the experts. Their feedback will contribute significantly the selection of our Top 10 sections.

So, check the COMMENTS bar for their input on every section. And read the NEWS for the complete breakdown of their commentary. We've asked them to be brutally honest, so filmmakers and surfers might want to keep a tissue handy. There can only be five qualifiers from this round, so it's bound to get ugly.

Oh, and one thing we forgot mention to Chris and Shane when we roped them into this job:next round they'll be expected to make sections for each other. Come on, guys: it's not like you're doing anything else. —NM

Oh yeah forgot to mention CM is even more of a legend in my book, for having help make the USED's music video for taste of ink.
