WHAT LED YOU TO WORK WITH THESE PARTICULAR SURFERS FOR INNERSECTION? These are friends that I have been hanging out with in Bali, so I wanted to help them out with their Innersection parts. They all already had their footage, so it was just a matter of coming up with a concept and helping them edit. I enjoy that part of it anyway.

WHAT WAS YOUR APPROACH TO MAKING THIS? First, I tried to think about the type of person they are, then look at all there waves and tried to think up a cool concept for the overall section. I tried to find music tracks I thought would fit them and their surfing then shoot the lifestyle/mini-movie. The guys were all getting surf clips while I was still editing, I'd just put those new clips into the edit as they came in. 

WHERE DOES MOST OF THE SURFING TAKE PLACE? Mostly Bali, since that’s home for these guys. But there’s also some Australia, Hawaii and California. Mikala probably has some weird spots he’ll never tell any of us about in there.

WHAT CAMERAS WERE YOU WORKING WITH? Canon XHA1, Canon 5D, Canon 7D

WHO PICKED THE MUSIC? I picked the music, but I always make sure the surfer likes it.

HOW INVOLVED WERE THE SURFERS IN THE EDIT PROCESS? I always let the surfers work with me on the editing process. I want them to be amped on the section, and they know their waves best, so they always give me good input.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THESE SECTIONS' STRONGEST FEATURES? I think it's the over-all concept of these section that will stand out, and of course the surfing is great in every one. They’re each amazing surfers, but it was cool working with all their different style. Marlon's has such a beautiful style, Mikala has really great waves and amazing tubes, and Dede's aerials and combos are really progressive. Making each one have it's own feeling with visuals and music, that’s the part that I really got to go to work. 

WHAT DO THESE SECTIONS TELL US ABOUT THE SURFERS? That was something I was really trying to accomplish with each of these edits, and they’re all pretty different. Marlon is a kid from Kuta and likes to party a lot, so I wanted to show some of his nightlife scene with crazy clubs and girls etc. Mikala was kind of hard because he’s such a pure, simple surfer — seems like that’s all he ever does — but I decided to try to make his section kind of about that. Dede’s section, to me, is just a little visual look at where he’s at in his life. He's taking this year to try to qualify for the WCT — no Indonesian's ever been able to do that, partly because it's so hard for them to travel. So, for Dede, just being at home is really special to him. His section's kinda about that. 

IF YOU QUALIFY FOR THE DVD, DO YOU HAVE A PLAN TO GO BACK TO WORK ON THE SECTION? Yeah, I would love to keep working on these sections, probably even shoot the concept all over again too, just to keep it fresh. The wave season is just starting here, so they'll have about 5-6 months of solid Indo to work on their sections. That's huge.


WHO ELSE CONTRIBUTED TO THE MAKING OF THIS SECTION? My wife, Jenifer and the surfers, of course: they all worked hard on these.
