INNERSECTION SURFER: Dylan Graves
WHAT LED YOU TO WORK WITH DYLAN FOR INNERSECTION? Innersection contacted me about the concept and I immediately thought of Dylan. At the time, Alek Parker and I were putting the finishing touches on our movie Spectacular Adventures! and Dylan had the final section — we went on a trip to Panama and he'd been surfing better than I had ever seen so I forwarded him the email and said let's try to keep the ball rolling.
WHAT WAS YOUR GENERAL APPROACH TO MAKING THIS? Our general approach was to shoot all new footage — Dylan really wanted to have an all Caribbean section (he's from Puerto Rico and like everyone on that island has immense pride for the area) so that became a focus. Unfortunately we had to juggle film trips with his 'QS schedule and unpredictable Caribbean storms, so it was a tough box to confine ourselves in, but I think we did a good job.
WHERE DOES MOST OF THE SURFING TAKE PLACE? Caribbean — mostly Puerto Rico and a few other islands.
WHAT CAMERA WERE YOU FILMING WITH? Panasonic HVX-200
HOW INVOLVED WAS DYLAN IN THE EDIT PROCESS? Dylan was really involved in the editing process. He knew the song, order of sessions, and how he wanted the basic look of the edit to be. I basically just punched keys.
WHO PICKED THE MUSIC? I'll let Dylan fill you in, but he knew this was the song we were using even back when you guys wanted us to clear the music ourselves.
ANYTHING YOU WANT US TO WATCH FOR IN THE SECTION — SOME SUBTLE BIT WE MIGHT OTHERWISE MISS? If you missed it then we didn't do a good enough job highlighting it — I hope you miss all the crooked horizons, unintentional focus pulls, and bad sound design.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE SECTION'S STRONGEST FEATURE? The work it took to score good waves in the Caribbean — I hope Dylan made it look easier than it was.
WHAT DOES THE SECTION TELL US ABOUT DYLAN AS A PERSON? He's Puerto Rican. He's extremely proud of his latin roots, so much so that he wanted to use a reggaeton song for this part (can you say death sentence?).
IF YOU QUALIFY FOR THE DVD, DO YOU HAVE A PLAN TO GO BACK TO WORK ON THE SECTION? Absolutely. If this section qualifies, it would be cool to try and fire up some more east coasters to do the contest and get a good crew together to all travel and work on these edits together. Dylan's already got a laundry list of places we didn’t get to shoot this time around, so I know he's frothing for the opportunity to work on it some more.
WHO ELSE CONTRIBUTED TO THE MAKING OF THIS SECTION? Carmen Vicari, Alek Parker, Jimmy Wilson, Blake Jones, Zander Morton, Ben Bourgeois.
