The lesson here is upsidedown and backsidefront. Sometimes the wrong way ends up being right.
WHERE DOES THE ZORB SONG COME FROM?
That's a new one. I just made that up. I just this one line, "I couldn't sleep cause my unicorn was snoring." And I've been drawing unicorns. So I wanted to do a song and I thought, yeah, I'll get some footage riding a unicorn. And then I saw Innersection so I was like, perfect, I'll put it all together.
WHAT WAS THE RECORDING PROCESS LIKE?
So fun. I was like, I gotta use this song, but the upload time to enter the comp was almost over. I had it all in my head, but the song I wrote in my head was more of a rap and you can hear all the words really clearly. And then I ran into Thai (Graham) and I was like, "Tai, I gotta make a recording." And he goes, "Come with me right now." So I grab my ukulele, run around the corner to this studio and two hours later we had two songs on a CD. And it all cost 75,000 rupiah (about US$7.50). I was like, this is amazing. Thai just got it straightaway. We did a mellow version first, then we did the party version, which is what we ended up using. Super fun. It usually takes a year or two to record a new song, but this was three days later.
AND THE TECH AT THE STUDIO DIDN'T SPEAK ANY ENGLISH?
No, he was just laughing. At the end he was trying to get it all perfectly. Like, we recorded it once, like, then added a track where we're just cheering and banging a bottle, and the tech is like, "The bottle is a bit off." Tai wanted to get it right, too, cause he's a good drummer. But I was sweet.
WHAT YOUR TAKE ON GAMELON MUSIC (LOCAL BALINESE MUSIC)?
Is that the local music with xylophones and cymbols and drums? Pretty trancy. But it can drive you a bit mad cause each song goes on for 45 minutes.
HOW'D YOU FIND OUT ABOUT INNERSECTION?
Kerrzy told me about it. I went on a trip with them and they were all talking about it. Kerr said, "You should enter a full novelty section." And I was like, "Yeah, why the hell not."
I'VE BEEN ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO DO SECTIONS THAT ARE WEIRDER AND STAND OUT MORE...SO IT WAS GOOD TO SEE IT GET NOTICED.
Yeah, I was just stoked to have people watching it and being part of it was fun.
WHEN YOU WERE AT [UN-NAMABLE SECRET LEFTHANDER NEAR BALI] DID YOU REALIZE THAT HALF THE GUYS THERE WERE ALSO SHOOTING THEIR INNERSECTIONS?
Well, Kerrzy films everything. And Ando, same deal. And then I saw some other guys filming.
IAN WALSH. AND YEAH, KERR AND YOU...THE WAVES ARE ALMOST IDENTICLE.
But it was such a fun day.
DID YOU THINK YOU HAD A CHANCE OF MAKING THE MOVIE?
Nah, I just didn't really think I had a chance. I'm probably the oldest guy in the competition. But I thought, maybe, cause it was so different.
[As if on cue, Ozzy's grom — dressed as Batman — crawls into his lap and insists we end this interview madness at once: "Daaaaddy, stoop talking."]
YOU RIDING SOME DIFFERENT BOARDS? WAS THAT A SINGLE FIN?
Nah, everyone thinks that. It's just a Thruster. There's some twin fins and a four fin. I've go the best twin-fin at the moment. Loving it.
WHY DO YOU SURF IN BUTTON-UP SHIRTS?
Yeah, my jacket, my button ups...it's like wearing a cape. Makes it more fun.
WHY IS YOUR UNICORN SNORING?
I don't know. Ridiculous things often pop into my head.
YOUR FILMER JIMMY...IS HE FROM ZORB?
He definitely from some other planet. He's hilarious. "A Month On The Moon," his film, it's really clever. He just turned 20 and he's really creative.
NICE TO SEE SOME CREATIVITY IN THE CONTEST.
Yeah, awesome.
YOU GONNA GET WEIRDER FOR THE MOVIE?
Well, I was thinking about using the other version and being real colorful, but I also like it the way it is. I'll probably change it all right at the end though.
YEAH, THAT SOUNDS ABOUT WRONG. —NM
